The Need for Disability Justice in Mental Health Care

As I have been working with Sick & Disabled Queer, Trans, Black, Indigenous, People of Colour (SDQTBIPOC) and learning about the intersection of abolition and disability, I have spent much of 2022 learning about Disability Justice, especially given the ongoing pandemic and state neglect in North America that has rendered disabled lives as disposable.

In the summer of 2022, I had an opportunity to create and go through a self-directed course on Disability Justice 101, with a specific focus on the applications of DJ in mental health care for my final project.

I learned so much from my course materials and even more so from the disabled, chronically ill, and Mad/mentally ill community members in my life throughout the process.

My final project, a Tik Tok video series, offers a starting point in the applications of Disability Justice in mental health work, and I hope that my sharing of this work will both inspire and challenge folks, especially my fellow practitioners, to cultivating a commitment to Disability Justice.
